It still does ridiculous damage to strength heroes who're trying to creep or kill another hero.

y but thats not the problem, the problem is the range of the aura.

Of course that you can use it to creep. Just root some almost dead creep. That's all. Other creeps will ignore that creep, and with a bit of luck, other players will not steal/deny him/her.

thorns are kinda counter for vamp aura...
